The Google Knowledge Panel is a feature presented by Google’s search engine when users search for notable entities, such as people, places, organizations, events, and more.

It’s a box that appears to the right of the search results (on desktop) or above the search results (on mobile devices) and provides a brief overview or summary of information about the subject of the search.

The goal of the Knowledge Panel is to give users quick access to key information without requiring them to click through to a website.

Here’s a breakdown of the Google Knowledge Panel’s key components:

What is Google Knowledge Panel? Why is it Important to Small Businesses?

  • Overview: For notable figures, this might include a photo, date of birth, and a brief bio. For businesses, this could encompass the business logo, address, operating hours, and more.
  • Additional Information: Depending on the subject, the Knowledge Panel may also provide additional data such as related books for authors, filmography for actors, discography for musicians, and so on.
  • Links to Social Profiles: Often, official social media profiles of the entity will be displayed.
  • Searches Related to: At the bottom of the panel, Google might suggest related people or entities based on the current search.
  • Sources: Information in the Knowledge Panel is often sourced from various places, including the Google Knowledge Graph, Wikipedia, and information taken from the web. Google may also source details from directly verified entities or individuals.
  • Feedback Option: Users have the option to provide feedback on the Knowledge Panel’s accuracy or completeness, offering suggestions for improvements.

For businesses, artists, public figures, and other entities, having a Knowledge Panel can enhance their online presence and provide users with reliable, consolidated information at a glance.

Entities can also claim their Knowledge Panel, which allows them to suggest edits and provide more accurate data directly to Google. If you Google your name or business and a Knowledge Panel pops up, make sure you click the button that says, “Is this your business?” or Claim this business”.

Google Knowledge Panels are generated based on a combination of data sources and algorithms. Here’s a breakdown of how they are generated and whether you can create your own:

How Google Generates Knowledge Panels:

  1. Google Knowledge Graph: At the core of Knowledge Panels is Google’s Knowledge Graph, a vast database that contains information about billions of entities and the relationships between them. The Knowledge Graph collects data from various trusted sources to ensure accuracy.

  2. Trusted Web Sources: Google aggregates information from reputable websites across the web. For example, Wikipedia is a common source, but many other databases and websites are used as well, depending on the entity in question.

  3. Direct Verification: In some cases, Google allows entities (like celebrities or businesses) to claim their Knowledge Panel and verify the accuracy of the information. This allows for a direct channel of communication between the entity and Google to ensure up-to-date and accurate information.

Can You Create Your Own Knowledge Panel?


Directly creating a Knowledge Panel isn’t possible — you can’t simply fill out a form and get one. However, you can increase the likelihood of one being generated and have some influence over its content:

  1. Increase Your Online Presence: Ensure you or your business is mentioned across multiple high-quality, reputable sources on the web. Having a Wikipedia page (that meets Wikipedia’s notability guidelines) can be particularly influential.

  2. Optimize Your Content: For businesses, having a Google My Business account, ensuring that your website is SEO-optimized, and marking up your content with structured data can help provide Google with clear and consistent information.

  3. Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number): For businesses, it’s essential that your NAP information is consistent across all online platforms, directories, and websites.

  4. Claim Your Knowledge Panel: If a Knowledge Panel for you or your business already exists, claim it. This gives you some control over the content and allows you to make corrections or updates as needed.

  5. Engage on Social Media: Ensure that you or your business has active profiles on major social media platforms, and ensure that these profiles are public and easily identifiable as related to you or your entity.

While you can’t directly create a Knowledge Panel, you can certainly create an environment where one is more likely to be generated by Google. Remember that Google’s goal is to provide users with accurate and relevant information, so the more authoritative and consistent your online presence, the higher the chance of a Knowledge Panel appearing for your name or business.
